Studio 4 Final Project

Project 3 Community Center

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Apply ideas of environmental sustainability in design
  2. Design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural, context and existing built context which impact on users’ experiences
  3. Combine the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), and the users’ experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context
  4. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology

About the design:
Batu 12 Orang Asli Community Center is a performing arts center that serves the local community. This performing arts center focuses on dance as its major activity which comprises of traditional orang asli dance, contemporary dance which is a mixture of modern and traditional dance as well as the orang asli spiritual dance. The concept of this design is "dynamism" which is derived from the "energy" during a dance itself. Dynamism is translated in this design through the changes of space from major-minor-major-minor-major. The changes of heights between the 3 main buildings and the 2 minor spaces also creates dynamism. Furthermore, the "hanging studios" that can be seen in the traditional dance studio enhances the experience of dynamism.
The outdoor spiritual dance area and the traditional dance studio is aligned in a horizontal axis connected by a grand staircase, while the 3 main buildings (contemporary dance studio, traditional dance studio, service and lounge building) are aligned in another vertical axis connected by a large airy veranda. The two side buildings with a modern twist of design complies the middle building which is the traditional dance building.

The plan of the community center as a whole has the two longer sides face east and west as to blend in with the orientation of the rest of the buildings in that area. However, due to the sustainability measures, each individual blocks of buildings are orientated in a way that the two longer sides are facing north and south. This is to reduce heat gain into the building as well as to create openings to allow natural ventilations.
